tack another 40 years onto an old companion with a full restoration.
Just like every paint job, every restoration is unique. Some bikes are in far worse condition due to their age and how they’ve been treated over the years…it’s to be expected and part of the process with any restoration - luckily for you we’re experienced and know how to travel this road.
Things to know and consider:
Paint - The likelyhood of getting the same exact color(s) that was on your bike originally, is 99% impossible unless you own the color or have a color code that is still functional. There simply is no database that presereves all bike paint codes for past or present existing bikes. That said, there is always an answer and we’ll go through the steps to nailing down the next best option for you.
Paint stripping -The bike's factory paint will be chemically stripped stripped down to raw metal and media blasted to remove all left over paint and any existing surface rust. At this point, seeing any dents, pitting or pinholes in the metal, become apparent and thus, usually treatable. Any existing chrome will have been masked off to prevent any abrasion or future paint from touching it - see ‘Chrome’ below for more info.
Decals - For the most part, reproduction decals are available. Our go-to supplier for these OEM bike decals is SSSinc in North Carolina. HERE is a link to their website where you will find a database of what they offer - If you don’t see what you’re looking for, let me know and we will reach out or begin seking out another source. Sometimes these older bikes will not have existing reproduction decals available anywhere and this will require physically reproducing the brand logos to be painted on.
Frame Mod / Repair - If it’s old, it’s probably seen better days. Your sweat alone will do a number on your bike which will result in rust. Rust can cause pitting in your steel and can result in needing to have cable guides, water bottle bosses and even tubes replaced. This not always the case but when it is, it can all be taken care of. We work with a few local frame builders in these instances to ensure your bike is being worked on by a dedicated, experienced, professional every step of the way.
Chrome - New chroming or re-chroming is not something we are set up to do nor is it something we offer to outsource simply because we have not found a reliable business that maintains the quality we know and expect to receive. If your chrome is rusting, unfortunately there is no cure other than having it re-chromed by a professional. If your chrome is in great shape or “good enough” then we can work around that. If it’s in terrible shape and you can live without it, knowing it will never get better, we will always recommend painting over the chrome at that point.
